READING INCENTIVE KICK-OFF

This year, the media center is sponsoring two reading incentive programs.

In our Readers’ Choice group, students can select any four titles in our media center collection, fill out a brief questionnaire on each book, and celebrate with a pizza party on May 1st. See Vickie Outzen for details.

Florida Teens Read, now in its second year, is the incentive sponsored by the Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME.) Students who read at least three books on the list of fifteen award nominees will be able to vote for their favorite title online in the month of April. One of the books will be selected to receive the Florida Teens Read award at the FAME convention next fall. Find out more by visiting the FAME website (www.floridamedia.org) and clicking on the Florida Teens Read link on the left-hand side. Student participants will also be invited to our end-of-the year pizza party, and as an added incentive, will be eligible for our drawing for gift certificates to local bookstores.

Mrs. Woolley will be happy to do a booktalk/PowerPoint presentation about the Florida Teens Read books in your classroom or in the media center. Please see us to schedule.

Media Center Specialists: Betsy Woolley and Vicki Outzen

The Media Center has a collection of over 17,500 books, 56 magazine subscriptions, and more than 1,300 multimedia items. We also have over 30 computer stations and several databases with on-and off-campus student access.

The Media Center's hours are from 6:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Students must have an official pass to visit the media center when they are not with a class. Passes are not required before or after school. Remember to sign in each time you visit.

Circulation FAQs:

  • How many books can I check out?

Up to 5 books may be checked out at a time for a 2-week period. Books can be renewed for another 2 weeks if there are no reserves on the material.

  • Where can I return books?

Bring your books to the media center or return them to the drop boxes located by the bus ramp or in the atrium.

  • What if I forgot?

Overdue fines are $.05/day. Students are responsible for all fines, as well as damaged or lost items. Circulation privileges are suspended until the student's record is clear.

  • Can I check out videos/DVDs?

Sorry, only teachers can check out audiovisual material. But in addition to books, students can check out books on tape, FCAT practice CDs, and back issues of magazines.

  • What do I have to do to check out things?

Students must present a library card to check out material. The first card is free and is issued to freshman during their English class' library orientation. Students who enroll after September or new upperclassmen must request a card in person. Replacement cards are $.50.

  • What if the library doesn't have what I need?

We'll do our best to get what we need through SUNLINK, a catalog of library holdings in all Florida public schools. We're also happy to help you check the PJC catalog or the public library catalog online.

  • Can I check the mdeia center catalog from home?

Yes, for all but the most current holdings. The media specialist can show you how to use SUNLINK to check what our media center owns.

Random FAQs:

  • Does the Media Center sponsor any special events?

In the fall, we host a Barnes & Noble book fair in the media center conference room. We often have some kind of contest in honor of Teen Read Week in October. In the spring, we sponsor a poetry contest, and a frequent reader group with a celebratory pizza lunch. In 2006 we started a book discussion group that meets after school. Future plans include a blog, so that the students can share information about good books they have read.

  • How can I become a library assistant?

Students who will be juniors or seniors can sign up for an elective called Guided Workplace Learning with their guidance counselor. They then meet with their Guided Workplace advisor when classes begin and choose to become either a guidance assistant, a dean's assisstant, an office assisstant, or a mdeia center assisstant. See Mrs. Outzen or Mrs. Woolley before you sign up so you can find out what our helpers do.

    Computer FAQs:

  • Do I need and Internet permission form?

No, that is no longer required. Permission is assumed unless parents request ni wroting that their children may not have Internet access. Students are expected to comply with the district's acceptable use policy while using the computers.

  • Can I print?

The Media Center computers are connected to a color printer. Copies are $.20/page.

  • What databases does the Media Center own?

We pay for you to be bale to find all sorts of information such as newspaper and magazine articles, pictures, reference book excerpts, transcripts, essays, website links, etc. online through Proquest and Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center. The school district pays for an online encyclopedia called Grolier Online. The state of Florida has made the resources of Florida Electronic Library available to all students through the district webpage. All of these resources are available both on and off the BTWHS campus. See one of the media specialists for passwords to use when you're not on campus.
