The Booker T. Washington Reading Program is a well-established program based on years of research, innovative teaching, and time-tested materials. It is a literature based program designed around textbooks, high interest novels, and newspapers. The goal of the Reading program is to help students to become proficient readers and to help them develop a life-long love of reading.
The success of the reading Program can be measured by the number of students who consistently make competitive scores on the FCAT, SAT, and ACT. The Reading Department is firmly committed to ensuring that all students have the opportunity to enhance their reading skills.
READING COURSES
::9th Grade::
Read 180-- The Read 180 instructional model is designed to maximize each student's reading and writing potential. This is a year-long, 100 minute course which provides whole group instruction followed by rotations which include computer station, audio/paperback station, and the small group instruction station.
Reading I-- Levels I and II; Year -Long Course
The purpose of this course is to help students develop strategies for reading literary and content area texts. Emphasis is placed on improving FCAT scores.
Reading III-- Level III; Semester Course
The purpose of this course is to help students develop strategies for reading literary and content area texts. Emphasis is placed on FCAT readiness.
Advanced Reading-- Levels IV and V; Semester Course
The major focus of this course is to provide students with the strategies they will need for the PLAN, PSAT, SAT 1, and the ACT. Students will also participate in a review of FCAT strategies.
::10th Grade::
Reading II-- Levels I and II; Year-Long Course
Emphasis is placed on FCAT preparation and improving comprehension.

Intensive Reading; Semester Course
The major focus of this course is FCAT strategies and improving comprehension.
