The NJROTC program at Washington High School consists of both
academic and military instruction. Students begin with Naval Science
One and, if desired, can take all four years as an elective credit.
Each course is a year long; therefore, it is important that they
fully understand what NJROTC is all about when they start the school
year.
The wearing of the uniform is an important part of the program and is normally
worn once a week and all day while at school. The student receives an inspection
grade, which is averaged in with their academic (test) grade. The US Navy provides
the uniforms free. The only cost to the student is the cleaning and upkeep
of the uniforms. They are US Navy property; therefore, must be turned in at
the end of the school year. The only items not provided are socks/stockings
and undergarments. Books and other classroom materials are also provided, except
for papers and pens/pencils.
A typical 5-day week would be as follows:
The chapter tests are 60% of the overall
grade while uniforms and
drill are 40%. We follow the same grooming standards,
as do active duty personnel in
the Navy. Shined shoes/brass, haircuts/hairstyles, and what types
of jewelry are authorized are some examples. The Cadet Field
Manual - which each student
has - spells this out in detail.
SEMESTER
EXAMS & ATTENDANCE:
NO exemptions for the 1st
semester exams. For 2nd semester exam exemptions: must have
at least a “B” for
the 1st semester and an “A” average for the two 9-weeks
of the 2nd semester. If a student misses 10 days or more in a
semester, they must
take, AND pass, the semester exam regardless of their average
(no exam exemptions). If they do not pass the exam, they receive
a maximum grade of 59, which is
a failing grade. Therefore, attendance is extremely important.
WHAT NJROTC IS:
a leadership development course
a course where self-discipline and responsibility are stressed
a course where teamwork is stressed
an opportunity to be involved in many extra-curricular activities such
as field trips to military installations, drill team, color guard, athletic
teams, air rifle team, academic team, orienteering (land navigation)
team, competition with other JROTC units and numerous community
service projects.
scholarships to the Naval
Academy or college ROTC units for qualified
cadets.
WHAT NJROTC IS NOT:
a recruiting tool for the
military; no military obligation. However,
special benefits for those that do enlist.
-
a disciplinary program. We develop young leaders and responsible
citizens through training and guidance. Being
a member of the NJROTC unit is a reward for good
behavior, not a punishment for bad behavior.
